Casa Marin 'Miramar Vineyard' Riesling 2009

Producer

Casa Marin

name Miramar Vineyard vintage 2009
variety Riesling rrp AUD$69.99

Terroir

Lo Abarca, San Antonio, Chile.

This glorious wine comes from Lo Abarca, from a vineyard 4km away from the Pacific Ocean. Situated close to the town of Cartagena, this new district follows up the success of Casablanca's cool climate wines. The Marin Family, lead by chief winemaker Maria Luz Marin, has been producing wines of cool climate, while mastering Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah and Pinot Noir. The Miramar Vineyard is their premium offering, a single plot of unique personality. This windy block is located at the highest part of the vineyard, 300m above sea level. Its flavour profile is something between Alsace, Eden Valley & Tasmania. A complex example indeed.

Packaging

The alsatian bottle, textural white paper label and the font used for the brand really stand out on a shelf. I particularly enjoy the back label mentioning the artists of the area. The 'Miramar Vineyard' is a single plot producing Riesling of striking ripe flavours and the way it is presented matches the style of the wine inside.  The use of screwcap with the logo of the company is a nice finishing touch to the bottle.

Opinion

I was so excited to taste this wine again - I have tasted it three times over the last 18 months and every time it has shown a different layer. It's delicious and generous, really exotic, mineral and wild, as well as powerful, ripe and firm. Very much gathers all the characteristics found the in the best rieslings regions all at once.  The way it is showing at the moment is a great indication of the pedigree of the site. It is at optimum drinking now, but I am really curious to see how it will evolve also.

Suggested food matching

Seafood, in particular oysters & fresh caught fish of white, lean flesh. The mineral & salty finish of the Miramar Riesling is the perfect addition. I expect that you won't need any lemon, as the wine itself will enhance the flavours of the food. Asian dishes, with spices and aromatic herbs, are also an option, yet more complex and not for everyone, as the wine itself is quite powerful in flavour.

The final word

I took this bottle the first time to a special dinner with wine people after the Claret Tasting in Melbourne's Crown Casino. At the table where winemakers, wine merchants, sommeliers & wine enthusiasts intermingled, we all agreed that Miramar Vineyard is world Class, and I felt so proud that it was a Chilean white. I am a massive fan of this wine. I find it so exciting that there is also still room for it to evolve and even improve. What I enjoy the most about Casa Marin is that every single family member has got a role in the company. At every level of the business there is a Marin involved. I find this approach quite Chilean, and I like that alot.
